Role: Lead Designer, WordPress Development

Company: Kismet Communications & Protozoa Design

Project Scope: XL

Problem

ODK is a prestigious leadership organization focused on empowering students during and beyond their college years. Through local and national events, chapters utilize the site to grow membership and provide continue education for their members. However, their existing website had become disjointed and did not provide the necessary tools for their chapters to create a cohesive presence. They needed a site that would encapsulated all of their branches and provide a unified experience at every touchpoint.

Action

This was a collaborative effort with Kismet Communications. They worked through the information architecture as well as writing all new copy for the web site. I began my process by getting to know the company and its members. Based on the needs and desires of both sides I set out to design an experience that reflected the leadership values of the organization while being easy to maintain for the staff. In addition, chapter leaders needed to be able to create and maintain their individual portions of the site.

I designed several template types that included event templates, chapter templates and page templates. In post development, I created training material for the staff and the chapters on how to create and maintain the site.

Results

The ODK staff immediately jumped in to promote their upcoming national event. They were able to do this quickly and easily. Chapters finally had a branded tool in which to highlight and promote their chapter groups. Feedback and involvement from their members has increased because they have been able to easily find information and communicate with leadership.
